Confidence in Marcelo Lomba's potential

Young goalkeeper could take over as starter and has the support of coach Cantareli

ITU (SP) - While Bruno's personal situation is not resolved, Flamengo has been training with the young Marcelo Lomba, 23, as a starter. This Tuesday (29.06), the goalkeeper began training with the rest of his teammates, in Itu, in the interior of São Paulo, and received praise from Cantareli, former goalkeeper of Rubro-Negro and current goalkeeping coach of Rogério Lourenço's team.

"Marcelo Lomba is a new goalkeeper. I've only been at the club for a short time, and it's difficult to evaluate him directly. But from what I've seen, he's talented and can be a big help in the future," he said.

Also a product of the youth academy, Cantareli believes that identifying with the Flamengo jersey is crucial. And Lomba, who has been at Gávea since he was a boy, has that in spades.

"I was raised here at Flamengo's youth academy and I know we have a good school. He's already played games at Maracanã and I know he's ready to take on the responsibility of being a starter if necessary," explained Cantareli, who also took the opportunity to highlight the goalkeeper's strengths.

"He's a fast goalkeeper and has a lot of personality. He's eager and that's already a good start for a Flamengo goalkeeper," he added.

Lomba has already played five professional games for Flamengo and conceded three goals. This year, he has played two games and conceded no goals. For right-back Leonardo Moura, the goalkeeper is ready for the challenges.

"Those of us who are close to him always see that he puts a lot of effort into training. And whenever there's some kind of training session where the teams are divided, I like to have Lomba as my team's goalkeeper. He closes the goal and ends up giving everyone a hard time," he joked.
