Sunday, November 8, 2009, Mineirão packed with more than 60 thousand people and a victory that was Flamengo's style. In that Brazilian Championship, in which the Rubro-Negro would win its sixth championship, Atlético-MG was the opponent in the 34th round, the same one on Wednesday night (27), for the debut in the Primeira Liga. In a direct confrontation for the top positions, the Mais Querido won and rose to third place in the table, while Galo fell to fourth place.
The result left the red-blacks two points behind the leader of the Brazilian Championship, São Paulo - who on Wednesday had drawn with Grêmio, at the Olímpico. Flamengo still had four more matches before lifting the trophy: Náutico (2-0), Goiás (0-0), Corinthians (2-0) and Grêmio (2-1).

That match, which featured a stunning goal from Petkovic, Maldonado's first goal for the Sacred Mantle, and Adriano's decisive strike, also featured a private duel between the Emperor and Diego Tardelli. Pet's goal, his 50th for the Sacred Mantle, dampened Atlético-MG's momentum. With scoring chances scarce, it was midfielder Maldonado who extended the lead in the 39th minute, stealing the ball in midfield. In a solo play, the Chilean cut past Werley and slotted it into the corner to score his first goal for the club.
