"I still wear the number 29 shirt, but one day I want to be number 1"
Marcelo Lomba evaluates a possible opportunity to be Flamengo's starter upon their return to the Brasileirão

Itu (SP) - At 23, Marcelo Lomba boasts a résumé that would be the envy of many players who have been in the game longer. A product of the club's youth academy, in addition to his achievements at the youth, youth, and junior levels, he has already won a Copa do Brasil, three Rio de Janeiro state titles, and a Brazilian championship as a professional.
Applauded from a young age, Marcelo Lomba earned the admiration of fans and fellow players at Gávea. During his brief career, he collected call-ups to the U-15 and U-17 national teams, including winning the South American Championship with Brazil. In 2006, however, the goalkeeper began to climb higher, as his age limit had reached its peak. Lomba was integrated into the senior squad.
Since then, he's only played five matches, as he has the difficult task of being a backup goalkeeper, which doesn't get many opportunities. But this year, he's already earned a chance to play in the Copa Libertadores opener against Universidad Católica, and could also be the starting goalkeeper for the Gávea team against Botafogo in their return to the Brazilian Championship on July 14th.
In a press conference held after training this Thursday (01.07), in Itu, the goalkeeper spoke about the possible opportunity and revealed his plans for the future.
Opportunity - I know this opportunity has come up, and if I play against Botafogo, I'll try to play my role and replace Bruno as best I can. The most important thing is that Flamengo wins the derby. I'm working hard to do well.
Cantarelli - I'm not going to judge goalkeeper coaches. I'll try to bring out the best in each one. Cantarelli is important because I was raised here in the youth academy with Adilio, Andrade, and now he's there too. His experience can help me evolve even further.
Being a reserve - The backup goalkeeper rarely plays, and the important thing is when he does play, he plays well. We have few opportunities, I know that, but when we do, we seize them.
Base generation - Zico is investing in the youth team, which is important. I see Antônio, Galhardo, and everyone training well. The motto I heard growing up was that Flamengo makes great players at home, and I hope this generation continues that tradition. Today, I try to talk to the younger players and advise the new kids.
Inspiration - When I started playing goalkeeper, I always thought about Taffarel. I always want to be simple and well-positioned. He was simple, and I admire him greatly. There's a saying that an easy save is one that's already been saved, and I believe I have to practice everything to improve.
Replace Bruno - I didn't expect it to happen this way, especially since Bruno is a friend and colleague. I hope this works out in the best possible way. I'm a Flamengo employee, and if I have to play, I'll be on the field.
Shirt number - I still wear the number 29 shirt, but one day I want to be number 1.
