On the day another World Cup begins, Brazilian football is at a standstill on the field, with only behind-the-scenes activity. Flamengo is no exception. But the Flamengo fans will have someone to root for at the World Cup in South Africa. Midfielder Kleberson will represent Flamengo in the competition, continuing the Gávea team's tradition of providing players to the Brazilian national team in World Cups. Chilean Fierro will also compete in the competition.
In total, Flamengo provided 33 players to the Brazilian national team in World Cups, with these players scoring 18 goals. Of the five World Cups won by Brazil, Flamengo had representatives in four; the exception was in 1962. The red-and-black players who won world championships for the Brazilian national team were: Zagallo, Moacir, Joel and Dida in 1958, Brito in 1970, Gilmar in 1994 and Juninho Paulista in 2002. In the 1958 World Cup, players Evaristo and Índio were part of the preliminary list, but ended up not being called up to the final list.
Zico leads the team in terms of caps and appearances. He wore the national team's jersey in the 1978, 1982, and 1986 World Cups, playing 14 matches. Junior Baiano, with seven caps in the 1998 World Cup, comes in second. Flamengo's top scorer in World Cups is Leônidas, with seven goals. Zico scored five. In only three World Cups (1934, 1962, and 2006), Flamengo had no players called up by Brazil.
Furthermore, it's worth noting that to this day, even with some of the club's most notable foreign players, Flamengo had never loaned a player to a foreign team competing in the World Cup. Fierro was the first.
