A squad overhaul for Flamengo next season is inevitable. All the Flamengo players know this. And the most experienced, like midfielder Renato Abreu, know that this is normal in football and are not intimidated. On the contrary, they are even more motivated to perform and continue wearing the Sacred Mantle in 2011.
Renato, despite being 32 years old, believes he is still at the peak of his physical and technical form and says he is "calm" about continuing to perform at a high level for Flamengo. According to him, what the team needs to do next season, regardless of any contract renewals, is to adopt a different attitude than in 2010.
"Whether I stay, reduce my age or not, it's not up to me to say. I'm 32 years old and running much more than many out there. Not just those at Flamengo, but many players haven't played as well as I have. I'm comfortable with my age, I'll play as long as I can. The board knows our potential, our ability. Next year, the mentality will be totally different," said the player, who promises to honor his commitments until the end.
"I fit the job profile, I'm a professional, I have a contract to fulfill. What's happening this year isn't good. But whether it's good or bad, Flamengo always restructures its team. Last year, they were champions and brought in new players. It's a constant change, normal in many teams. We know what can happen, it's up to us to fulfill the contract and work in the best way possible," he observed.
Before thinking about 2011, however, there is still an open challenge in 2010: securing a spot in the next edition of the Copa Sudamericana. This could happen with a good result in the weekend's game against Santos.
"We'll focus on working hard, on playing against Santos. There's a small chance of reaching the Copa Sudamericana, and it'll be up to the board and the coaching staff to decide who will stay next year," he concluded.
