When he was promoted to the first team in 2007, Welinton wasn't yet the center-back he is today. He was a youngster, a product of the club's youth academy, who had enjoyed great success in the youth ranks and needed to be polished so that Flamengo could soon reap the rewards. And that's exactly what's happening now, in the second half of 2010.
With the arrival of Vanderlei Luxemburgo, the defender earned a starting spot in Flamengo's first team. He seized the opportunity with all his might, and with his serious demeanor and speed, he earned the coach's trust. Maturing every day, Welinton is very pleased with his current form.
"We've been growing in life, learning from a young age. Everyone here knows the pressure. We have to face it head on, whatever comes our way. I've been playing consistently since last year, earning my place, and I'm very happy about that. I want to help Flamengo and achieve a lot here," said the defender, who, despite this, knows the team's situation isn't so good.
"It's always a loss. Dropped points are sorely missed, and we need them. It serves as a lesson to not let our guard down in the final rounds. We have to be calm in the next round, so that, regardless of the pressure, we can get a positive result," he added.
Flamengo's squad returns to training this Thursday (11.10), at 16:30 pm, at CT Ninho do Urubu, in Vargem Grande. On Friday (12.10), the team works in the morning and travels to Sete Lagoas, where they face Atlético-MG, Saturday (13.10), at 19:30 pm.
