After the 3-2 victory over Atlético-PR on Wednesday night (12.08) at Maracanã, coach Cristóvão Borges spoke to the press. In the interview, he praised the team's attitude, praised the strength of the squad, which achieved victory despite having many injured or suspended players absent, and commented on individual performances.
Check out the main excerpts from the press conference:
Play style
"The team is showing signs of improvement. We're playing better, and the results aren't all satisfactory, but the team has been producing a good and engaging game. We have potential, we have a lot to grow, and they (the players) are delivering. This isn't the first time; they've been playing well for a few matches now. We've outperformed our opponents, and that's encouraging; we're showing a more mature game. We still need to better control the match, but we've outperformed our opponents in recent matches."
Ederson
"Ederson played very well, especially within our plan. Our style of play, led by Emerson, was practiced and adhered to. It was a huge commitment to what was agreed upon. He moved well, was calm, and helped a lot. He's coming off preseason, not at his best, but he did very well, and we were very happy."
Kayke
- The goal was to have continuity, keeping the ball up front. It went well too.

"I think it was his best match since I've been here. The thing is, when we started, our game was unbalanced, and we were looking for that balance. When you achieve that, which is what we've achieved in the last few matches, it facilitates everyone's growth. When things were unbalanced and results fluctuated, we couldn't maintain consistency, and some suffered more than others. We played well, but then we lost... The team is improving, and we've seen many players grow."
Set pieces
"The way they concede goals from set pieces is a concern. In the last few matches (Santos and Ponte Preta), we only got one point out of six because of this. It's a concern, and we're training to correct it. We practiced this this week, watched videos, but we still conceded goals. But they're aware of it, we talked about it in the locker room, and we need to improve on this aspect."

"Guerrero is a decisive, goal-scoring, experienced player, and it shows. He's been deciding games for us, but the team currently has a squad with options to fill in for any player's absence. We're reaching a level where the team remains strong regardless of who takes the field. This is our goal, and this way we'll get where we want to be. When the changes happen, we'll be able to play and maintain a good level of performance. When I arrived here, we struggled because we had few options, and we qualified and expanded the squad. We'll use the best options so the team can play well, be strong and forceful, as in recent games."
Tactical changes
Atlético-PR has two defensive midfielders who distribute the play well and organize it. Today, we didn't do that because we started there to inhibit their team. Ederson and Alan Patrick were tasked with marking them. Márcio Araújo, who marks well and is a dynamic player, like Éverton, was assigned to either close or open the play, depending on which side the ball was on. I held Canteros, who has good passing, to the side. And it worked.
Pressure
"We've been playing well for a few games, but this was the one we won. So people will talk about this one; the ones we didn't win don't matter. Not for us, but for us, the others are also very important. That's how you analyze football. We need it, and football has to win to climb the table, to compete... We haven't been able to do that in the last few games, but today we came away with the victory. Of course, the mood improves, and the analyses are more favorable."
