David Luiz is Mengão's new defender
Defender signed a contract with Mais Querido until December 2022
By Romulo Paranhos - inThe nation asked, and Mengão delivered! David Luiz is Flamengo's third signing in this summer transfer window. The 34-year-old defender signed a contract with the club until December 2022 and arrives to further strengthen the Flamengo squad in the season's major competitions.
Hailed by the Red-Black Nation on social media, David Luiz began his career in the youth ranks of Vitória-BA at the age of 14, where he initially played as a defensive midfielder. With few opportunities in this position, the athlete was moved to defense and quickly rose to prominence with the Bahian team. In 2007, the defender was loaned to Benfica in Portugal, and within a short time at the club, he quickly became a starter.
One of the Portuguese team's standout players, the Brazilian gained even more notoriety in European football when he transferred to Chelsea in the 2011-12 season. His debut for the English side came in the derby against Liverpool, where he came on as a second-half substitute. In the following match, David Luiz was named in the starting lineup, put in a brilliant performance, and remained in the team since. With solid performances, he extended his contract with the English club for another five years.
In mid-2014, David was sold to Paris Saint-Germain for €50 million, becoming the most expensive defender in the French club's history. He remained there for two seasons and even formed a central defensive partnership with his compatriot Marquinhos. In August 2016, he returned to Chelsea and played for three more seasons, moving to rivals Arsenal after the 2018-19 season.
For the main Brazilian team, David Luiz has played 57 games, scored three goals and provided three assists, winning the 2013 Confederations Cup and the 2014 Superclásico das Américas titles.
