December 6, 2009. An unforgettable date for all Flamengo fans and also for all the players who participated in that 2-1 victory over Grêmio, at a packed Maracanã, giving the Rubro-Negro its sixth Brazilian title in its history. One of those who felt a very special taste that afternoon was young defender David.
He, who was only five years old when Flamengo won its last Brazilian Championship, in 1992, does not hide the fact that the memories of that match are eternalized in his memory.
"Of course, that game ends up coming back to me. It was a historic match for me and for Flamengo and it's always good to have those memories," he recalled.
Despite this, David doesn't want the glories to be just a thing of the past. The defender believes the team now needs to forget the sixth title and start thinking about, perhaps, the seventh.
"What's done is done. It was important to have won that title, but now it's a different championship and we have to fight hard to achieve another good campaign, and who knows, even a second championship," he said.
The mission isn't easy, and the red-and-blacks know the pressure will be even greater with Flamengo entering the competition as defending champions. But David believes the team is ready for the challenge.
"Without a doubt, teams will now respect Flamengo more and will want to take points from us, and we have to be aware of that. We need to get as many points as possible right at the start of the championship, which is very important. Now it's time to focus on the Brazilian Championship and keep working," he concluded.
