Defense is the weapon to end a winless streak

Lomba relies on defensive solidity to secure three points at Pacaembu, against Corinthians

With two draws and a loss in their last three games, Flamengo has dropped out of the top four and currently occupies eighth place in the 2010 Brazilian Championship. However, they remain close to the leaders, needing only a win to return to the top four. Therefore, goalkeeper Marcelo Lomba wants nothing less than a victory over Corinthians next Sunday (August 8th) at Pacaembu.

Since taking over as Flamengo's starting goalkeeper after the World Cup, Lomba has played five matches and conceded only two goals, numbers that have made the Flamengo defense the best in the championship in these five rounds. Happy with the statistics, the goalkeeper praised the entire defensive system and placed his bet on it to surprise second-placed Corinthians in São Paulo.

"The defensive sector is very compact. Everyone knows what to do, they are calm and are managing to prevent the opponents from scoring. As a goalkeeper, I am very happy with this result and we will try our best to continue this good record in the game against Corinthians. We know that not conceding goals is already a very big step towards a victory," he said.

Just three points away from returning to the top four, Flamengo sees this match as crucial for a strong start to the first half of the Brazilian Championship.

"We are just three points away from the top four. In other words, a victory could put us back among the top four. That's why this match is crucial. We're going to São Paulo respecting Corinthians and knowing the difficulties, but we want to come back with the three points," he added.
