Catalan Domènec Torrent, 58, is Flamengo's new coach. In an agreement reached this Friday (31) with the club's board, the coach signed a one-and-a-half-year contract with the club. Torrent arrives in Brazil this week to begin work aiming at the Mais Querido's debut in the Brazilian Championship against Atlético-MG, at Maracanã, on August 9.
Between June 2018 and November 2019, the coach managed New York City FC in the MLS. During that time, Torrent achieved the best results in the club's history, reaching the semifinals of the competition last season. Leading the North American team, Domènec played 60 matches, winning 29, drawing 15, and losing 16. He scored 104 goals and conceded 76.
The Catalan has a long history in international football, especially in Europe. As Pep Guardiola's assistant at Barcelona (2008-2012), Bayern Munich (2013-2016), and Manchester City (2016-2018), Torrent won 24 titles during his 11-year partnership. Before accepting the invitation to become an assistant, he had already managed Palamós, Palafrugell, and Girona, among other Spanish clubs.
Domènec is the 12th foreign coach to lead Flamengo, the sixth European to lead the club. He will be the first Spaniard or Catalan to coach the red-and-black team.
