At 55 years old, Runco has been part of the medical team for the Flamengo professional soccer team and the Brazilian National Soccer Team for 12 seasons, since 1998. According to the Flamengo doctor, the objective of this commission, created by the CBF (Brazilian Football Confederation), is to highlight the fact that many careers can end up being shortened due to the overexposure of athletes.

"Our goal is to preserve the athletes' health. We have an increasingly packed schedule and extremely intense physical demands. We will discuss this matter regularly and try to improve this issue for everyone. The player's career must be preserved," stated Runco, who believes that concentration in Brazilian football should take place after matches to avoid further strain.

"The wear and tear after the games is much greater. Players need to eat well, rest, and this has to be controlled, but it doesn't happen. How are these athletes going to go back on the field three days later? It becomes complicated. This only favors the appearance of muscle injuries and fractures, which is what we want to avoid," he explained.

A renowned and experienced physician in the world of football, the doctor also points out that there is a certain amateurism in some aspects of sports medicine in Brazil, which can no longer happen.

"There are clubs that travel without a doctor, even in the second division, and hire a doctor in the city where they're going to play. I've heard this from players. This mentality can never exist. The athlete's health comes first. It's fundamental to have a partnership with the players; they need to trust the club doctors. Furthermore, there also needs to be an improvement in the schedule, with fewer games and more rest time," he concluded.
