Efficient, Flamengo prevails and thrashes Inter: 3-0
The team capitalizes on set-piece opportunities, wins again, and moves into a South American qualification spot.
By From the team at Flamengo's official website - inOpponents' set pieces have already caused Flamengo to lose important points in this Brazilian Championship. But this Saturday (October 16.10th) was different. They were the biggest weapon for the red-and-black team to beat Internacional 3-0 at Engenhão. Deivid opened the scoring with a spectacular free-kick from the penalty spot, Renato extended the lead, and Deivid headed in a corner kick to seal the final score.
With this result, the team remains undefeated under Vanderlei Luxemburgo's command, with two wins and one draw, and climbs to 13th place with 37 points, entering the qualifying zone for the next Copa Sudamericana. Now, Flamengo will have a full week of work preparing for the derby against Vasco next Sunday (October 24.10th). The group will reconvene on Tuesday (October 19.10th) at 10 am at Ninho do Urubu.
Efficiency makes the difference.
In a first half where the goalkeepers didn't have much to do, Flamengo's talent for deciding the game from set pieces made the difference. Internacional had more possession, but few shots on goal – Marcelo Lomba finished the first half without making a single save. Flamengo, in turn, had the first good chance in the 14th minute, when Deivid was brought down in the area by Índio: penalty, which he himself converted to open the scoring.
With the lead on the scoreboard and playing intelligently, Flamengo drew Inter into their own half and tried to counter-attack. In the 33rd minute, Deivid almost scored the second goal. Juan broke down the left and crossed into the area, Índio missed the ball, and the number 99, caught off guard, ended up shooting over the bar. But five minutes later, Renato extended the lead. With a powerful, low free-kick from a long way out, he perfectly placed it in the left corner of Renan's goal: 2-0 and Flamengo celebrations at the Engenhão stadium.
Deivid scores early and decides the game.
The result after the first 45 minutes of the game, however, didn't exactly excite the Flamengo fans. After all, in the last round, against Avaí, the team also opened up a 2-0 lead and ended up conceding an equalizer early in the second half. Therefore, to avoid any surprises, Vanderlei Luxemburgo asked the team to start the second half attacking. And the Flamengo players obeyed.
Right from Flamengo's first attack, Diego Maurício made an individual play and passed to Deivid to shoot. Renan made the save and the ball went out for a corner, which Renato took and headed in by the number 99, who this time didn't waste the opportunity: 3-0. Final result, a victory by a three-goal difference, something that hadn't happened since April 4th, when the team thrashed Friburguense in the State Championship.
