The Brazilian Championship is still in its early stages, and the match between Flamengo and Atlético-GO, this Sunday (July 18.07th), at Serra Dourada, is only the ninth for both teams in the competition. However, for the Rio de Janeiro team, it is important to accumulate as many points as possible early on. Therefore, the goal of the Gávea team is to return from Goiás with a place in the G4.
With 12 points, Flamengo is tied with Cruzeiro and Santos, but due to tie-breaking criteria, occupies fifth place, while Santos, who face Fluminense (third place), is fourth, and Cruzeiro, who will face Goiás, is sixth. In other words, a combination of results could propel Flamengo into the top four of the table.
"Our goal is to reach the top four as quickly as possible. We closed the gap with the victory in the Brazilian Championship, but we want to get into this top group soon and then think about bigger goals, like becoming Brazilian champions," said striker Diego Maurício.
Coach Rogério Lourenço believes that the match against Atlético-GO is crucial for Flamengo's aspirations. Coming off a victory in the derby against Botafogo, the coach hopes the team will string together a series of good results in the Brasileirão.
"It's an important match. We have every chance of finishing in the top four. Football is about opportunity. Every game is a final and we have to take it one game at a time, but it's a great chance. We have an opponent in a difficult situation. There can be no underestimation or thinking it will be easy. I tried to talk about this with the players," he noted.
Flamengo and Atlético-GO face off this Sunday at 16 PM at Serra Dourada.
