Zico's first day as Flamengo's executive director of football was marked by plenty of conversation and clarifications about the Galinho's role as head of the department. Flamengo's biggest idol, besides hitting the ground running in his new role, experienced emotional moments upon stepping onto the Gávea pitch on Tuesday morning (June 15.06).
Raised at the club, Zico remembered when he arrived at Flamengo, still as a young prospect, but, from now on, he wants to start from scratch.
"Today I remembered that I arrived here 44 years ago. Currently, there's only one person from that time here. It's a huge satisfaction and a great emotion to return to Flamengo. I arrive with an open heart and starting from scratch to try to make a better club. I want to be able to build a good team and leave a legacy for future generations. It's an idea we have, the president and I," he said.
And on the very first day of work, Galinho explained that Flamengo is, indeed, looking for reinforcements. And especially for the attack, since they lost Emperor Adriano.
"First, we have to replace the losses we'll face in the squad. The priority is attack, especially since we lost Adriano. It's difficult to sign a player of his ability, but we're trying. Our only attacking players are Vagner Love, whose situation hasn't been determined yet, Diego Maurício, Paulo Sérgio, who returned to replenish the squad, and Vinícius Pacheco, who isn't a striker by trade. We lost a defender, which is why Jean arrived. In midfield, we need players who play offensively, since we have defensive players," explained Zico, calming the red-and-black fans.
"We're looking for names that can help Flamengo. There's a lot of competition in the market, but we have things well underway. You just won't hear any names from me. I'll only say anything when it's finalized. So, we have Jean hired, who showed up and worked today (Tuesday)."
