While São Paulo had already dominated the match this Wednesday (September 08.09th) from the opening minutes, when they opened the scoring, Flamengo's situation became even more difficult when striker Diogo was sent off in the first half. The players believe this sending-off was crucial to the negative result at Morumbi Stadium. Furthermore, left-back Juan believes the team defended poorly in the first half and, as a result, ended up falling behind.
"In the first half, we didn't find our feet and we counter-attacked a lot, and with one man down it was difficult," said the number 6.
Defender Ronaldo Angelim agrees. According to him, the team was trying to level the playing field after São Paulo's first goal, but Diogo's red card ended up complicating things a bit for the Red-Blacks.
"The goal came early, the referee sent off one of our players, and the situation really got complicated. They quickly went 1-0 up, but we tried to level the score, even though we weren't creating much. But after the sending off, they had more space, and that made things difficult for us," said the defender, whose speech was echoed by Willians.
"Right at the start, due to a mistake on our part, we conceded a goal. The coach told us to be careful with the diagonal, but they managed to open the scoring and with the sending off it ended up making it even more difficult," he concluded.
The Flamengo delegation spends the night in São Paulo and only returns to Rio on the afternoon of this Thursday (09.09), when they train in Gávea, at 16 pm.
