Goalkeeper Felipe only played 45 minutes in his debut for Flamengo. Since the match against Londrina was a friendly, Vanderlei Luxemburgo took the opportunity to make several changes to the team. But just one half was enough for the Flamengo goalkeeper to prove his worth. He not only kept a clean sheet, but also saved a penalty in the 23rd minute.
After being cheered by the fans at his first training session at Estádio do Café last Friday (January 07.01th), Felipe was beginning to grasp the magnitude of playing for Flamengo. And he had further proof of this on Sunday (January 09.01th). During the free kick, he remained calm. He waited for the kicker to decide which corner to choose, jumped to his left, parried the ball, and celebrated – celebrated wildly. The stadium, of course, erupted in cheers.
"It's great to start this way. Nothing better than saving a penalty right in my debut. I'm very happy. It was a great way to start," he celebrated.
It's clear that it's still too early to celebrate, but if first impressions are what count, Felipe knows he's taken an important step towards establishing himself in the hearts of the fans and his teammates as Flamengo's new number 1.
"I knew the pressure would be high. It's a great team, I'm replacing a great goalkeeper who was at the club for a long time and won many titles, but I accepted the project, the challenge, and I hope to be very successful here now," he added.
Flamengo will play one more friendly in Londrina before returning to Rio. Next Sunday (January 16.01th), the Rubro-negro will play against América-MG, also at the Estádio do Café.
