Midfielder Fernando's life at Flamengo took a dramatic turn last month. He was on the bench, without many opportunities, when, between December 2010 and January 2011, he received three pieces of news: he started the final game of last year, against Santos, renewed his contract, and now, against Londrina, in the first match of the season, he will also start.
There's no shortage of reasons for the player to believe this is the year to establish himself at Flamengo. After taking good care of himself during the holidays, Fernando arrived at preseason in good physical shape and prepared to seize this opportunity.
"We finished the season at a good pace, but during the holidays we lost a bit, right? You eat a lot on New Year's, at Christmas, but you can keep in shape a little, if you're aware: do some exercise, go for a run. That's my case. I took good care of myself and I'm not feeling too tired. The work is being done well, Mello talked a lot with us, so we can still be doing this type of work during the Carioca to perform well," said the player, who knows the importance of Sunday's friendly (09.01).
"It's the beginning of the season. Luxemburgo stressed that the players shouldn't play the full 90 minutes, that he's going to test a lot of things, and the group is still getting to know each other, new players are arriving, and we're working hard to start the season well. We're giving our all to get a little bit of a break in this team," he noted.
Happy with the current situation, Fernando doesn't hide his expectations for success in 2011. The player's goal is to win over the Red-Black Nation and help the Flamengo team win titles this season.
"I'm very happy to be home in Rio, at Flamengo, with a renewed contract. I hope to deliver on the field. I think I did well in the last game of last year, while the field wasn't flooded, and I hope to repeat that now in 2011," he added.
