The year 2010 is drawing to a close, and with it comes a learning curve for the red-and-blacks. After a season with two titles in 2009, Flamengo had no achievements to celebrate in professional football, a feat not seen since 2005. The players know they need to change some things to compete for trophies in the four competitions they will compete in in 2011 (Carioca, Copa do Brasil, Brasileiro, and Sudamericana). Experienced midfielder Maldonado warns that now is the time to reflect on everything that happened last year to make the next a successful season.
"Many situations occurred on and off the field. There were many problems, from the board of directors to the players, from all sectors. It ends up affecting the players in some way. It's not an excuse, we know the pressure is real, it's constant. It's important to reflect on what was done well and badly this year and come back different next year," he said.
The Chilean also already knows the recipe for a happy new year. For Maldonado, it's important to stay focused on the field, pay attention to all the coach's instructions, and strive for victories.
"I think focusing as much as possible on what you do, always trying to do your best, regardless of the situation, dedicating yourself to the maximum, listening to the coach, taking care of yourself off the field. It's the least we can do. Of course, the moment is always different. Being focused on what you do leads to better performance," he added.
Flamengo will return to training on January 3rd at Ninho do Urubu in Vargem Grande. After that, the delegation will travel to Londrina for preseason training.
