Even with reinforcements from the first team, Flamengo's youth team was unable to maintain its rhythm and was thrashed by Botafogo this Sunday at Caio Martins Stadium in the first leg of the Octávio Pinto Guimarães Cup quarterfinals. The home team played a strong first half, opening up a 4-0 lead and winning the match 5-1, complicating the Rubro-Negro's situation in the competition. In the return leg on Wednesday at Gávea Stadium, coach Armênio Moura's team needs to win by four goals to qualify for the semifinals.

Right from the start of the game, Alvinegro came out on top, knowing the importance of securing a result at home, and scored the first goal through striker Alex, who ended up being the star of the derby. He added the second shortly after from the penalty spot. And, still in the first half, Marquinhos Galhardo scored the third and Alex the fourth, sending the red-and-black team to the locker room trailing 4-0.

The rout in the first 45 minutes of the game ended up crushing the team from Gávea, who still managed to pull one back in the second half. However, Renan scored another for Botafogo, giving the final score: 5-1. This was only Flamengo's third defeat in the competition, and the one with the largest margin of all.

The two teams meet again on Wednesday afternoon at 16 p.m. in Gávea. Flamengo needs a 4-0 win to qualify. A 5-1 victory will send the match to a penalty shootout. Any victory by a greater goal margin will also secure the spot for Flamengo.
