Flamengo secured their third draw in five games in the 2010 Brazilian Championship on Saturday night (May 29.05). Despite playing at the Maracanã, the Rubro-Negro could only draw 1-1 with Grêmio. Petkovic opened the scoring seven minutes into the first half, but defender Rodrigo scored for the Gauchos early in the second half. The result leaves the team from Gávea with six points in the standings. Their next match is Wednesday at 21:50 p.m. against Palmeiras at Pacaembu.
"A Brazilian game is a 2-0, 1-0, 1-1 game... There were set pieces, which we need to be careful about, but we'll keep working," lamented defender Álvaro.
Pet returns in style
Coach Rogério Lourenço made a surprising change with the lineup, fielding Flamengo with three defenders. Álvaro took Lenon's place in the final training session. And just seven minutes into the match, the change seemed to have paid off. With a renewed contract and showing signs of physical fitness, Petkovic started the match flying. After attempting a couple of tricky passes, he decided to shoot. Vinícius Pacheco received the ball on the left and simply rolled it into the middle of the box. The Serbian controlled the ball and fired a powerful shot past Victor, opening the scoring.
The advantage didn't slow the Gávea team down. Two minutes after the goal, Pet and Pacheco switched roles. The number 43 passed to the number 22, who burst into the box and tried to pass it to the middle, but Ozeia cut it out. In the 17th minute, Camacho had a good chance, but shot straight at the defense. In the 19th minute, it was Alvaro's turn, who was well positioned in the box, but controlled the ball with his hand. Grêmio tried to counterattack, but Flamengo scored again before the final whistle. Vagner Love received the ball from Leo Moura in the six-yard box and deflected it into the goal. But the referee flagged for offside, and the teams went to the locker room with Flamengo leading only 1-0.
Another draw
The second half began with Flamengo pressing again. Just two minutes into the match, Vagner Love had a chance to extend the lead after a superb pass from Petkovic, but his shot went straight at Victor. And as if he'd never score, the Gauchos equalized shortly after. In the sixth minute, Rodrigo rose alone in the box and headed in a corner kick to make it 1-1. The goal somewhat dampened the red-and-blacks' spirits.
To try to regain control of the match, Rogério Lourenço decided to make three changes. Petkovic, Vinícius Pacheco, and David were out. Diego Maurício, Gil, and Ramón were in. With a more attacking team, Flamengo had to go all out. And they did. With sheer willpower and three natural strikers, the team continued to pressure Grêmio. However, their persistence and pressure didn't translate into goals, and the final score was a draw.
