Considered not only the greatest icon of this Flamengo squad, but also one of the most talented names on the field, Serbian Petkovic is on the rise at Gávea. Last Friday (July 16.07), due to illness, the midfielder did not train with his teammates. Despite this, he traveled with the group to Goiânia late in the evening and should not be a problem for Sunday's match (July 18.07).
"What the medical department told me is that he arrived feeling unwell, but that it wouldn't be a problem for the game and I'm counting on him," said coach Rogério Lourenço.
The group is also counting on the talent of Gávea's number 10. For goalkeeper Marcelo Lomba, Petkovic is a player who can tip the balance in Flamengo's favor.
"Pet is an idol and represents the experience and love the fans have for him. I like him like that. I know he's doing well when he leaves the field and continues to be there on the bench helping and shouting. He's the kind of player who anticipates the play. When he hits the striker, he stops right in front of the goal and makes everyone's job easier," said the number 29, whose speech was endorsed by defender Ronaldo Angelim.
"Pet proved he has what it takes to be the player of the year last year. He practically decided the game against Botafogo with a through ball between the defenders and, above all, he's a leader. He's crucial to the squad: he talks to the players, he's experienced, he understands football well, and he's bound to be a great help. I see him, Leo Moura, and Juan as the players who carry the team forward, they're the most creative, and they're unique," added the sixth-time champion.
