With the traditional red-and-black spirit, Flamengo went in search of a heroic draw against Grêmio, this Wednesday (22.09), at the Olímpico, in Porto Alegre. The team dominated the game, despite playing away from home, did not give up at any point in returning with some point from Rio Grande do Sul, and was rewarded for its persistence in the 40th minute of the final stage.
The team was losing 2-1 when Petkovic, who came on in the second half, received a great pass from Leo Moura, who had already provided the assist for Kleberson's goal in the first half, and decided the final score of the game: 2-2. Jonas and Douglas scored the goals for the team from Rio Grande do Sul.
With the result, coach Silas' team reached 28 points and moved up to 14th place in the table. Flamengo's next challenge takes place on Saturday (25.09), at 18:30 pm, at Engenhão. The current Brazilian champion hosts Palmeiras, ninth place, with 32, who beat Grêmio Prudente, away from home, also on Wednesday.
Kleberson's star shines again
Just like what happened in the classic last Sunday (19.09), against Fluminense, Flamengo ended up falling behind on the scoreboard early in the first half. Just six minutes in, Grêmio made it 1-0 with Douglas, in a very fast run against Ronaldo Angelim, who ended up not being spared by coach Silas and started playing.
So, the red-and-black team's mission, already challenging, became even more complicated. But the team from Gávea wasn't intimidated. With more possession and playing at ease, as if playing at home, Flamengo pressured the Tricolor, which was only trying to counterattack. However, neither team had much of a chance to find the net.
When they had the chance, however, Grêmio didn't waste it. In the 33rd minute, Leonardo Moura, Flamengo's most active player on the pitch, advanced down the right and crossed for Kleberson to score his third goal in the last four games, leveling the score at 1-1. Three minutes later, in the 36th minute, Grêmio almost took the lead again after a Souza-Douglas pass in the box, but Marcelo Lomba saved Flamengo, and the first half ended in a draw.
Draw with Flamengo's face
Despite playing better, Flamengo returned for the second half with two changes. Coach Silas had to make changes to his lineup due to the physical fatigue of two players: Ronaldo Angelim and Kleberson, who were replaced by Jean and Maldonado. But it was Grêmio who scored again, again within 10 minutes. The goal came from a play very similar to the one that led to two Fluminense goals in last Sunday's 3-3 draw: a corner kick, a header at the near post, and the ball fell cleanly to Jonas to make it 2-1.
As in the first half, Flamengo tried to ignore the blow and went all out against Grêmio. In the 15th and 19th minutes, Diogo, seeking his first goal for the red-and-black team, unleashed powerful shots, one from inside and one from outside the box, and came close to equalizing. In the 21st minute, defender David nearly scored with a header, but Victor made a great save to save the home team. Capitalizing on the momentum and to give the team even more attacking momentum, Silas replaced Rodrigo Alvim with Petkovic.
By pushing forward, Flamengo created space for counterattacks, and in the 25th minute, Jonas was one-on-one with Lomba, but Maldonado saved on the line. The following minute, André Lima also had a good chance, but was stopped by the Flamengo goalkeeper. In the 31st minute, Jonas again shot, but Flamengo's number 29 made a spectacular save. The Gaucho pressure didn't faze Flamengo, who kept fighting until the end. And they were rewarded for it. In the 40th minute, Leo Moura delivered a perfect pass to Pet, who dribbled past goalkeeper Victor and tied the match, securing another point for the team from Gávea.
