Flamengo knew it would face a tough task this Sunday (08.08) when it faced Corinthians at Pacaembu Stadium. Despite showing a lot of determination, the red-and-black team failed to become the first team to beat the black-and-whites at home in this edition of the Brazilian Championship. With a goal from Elias in the 39th minute of the first half, the São Paulo team won the duel, valid for the 1th round of the 0 Brazilian Championship, 13-2010.
With the result, Flamengo drops to tenth place and is a little further away from the fight for a spot in the top four, with 4 points. Corinthians reaches 17 and continues to fight for the lead, in second place. Next Saturday (August 28), the red-and-blacks return to the field to face Ceará, at 14.08:18 pm, at Maracanã.
Elias opens the scoring
Playing at home, Corinthians started the match trying to pressure Flamengo and had more possession than Flamengo, having the first good chance to score in the eighth minute, with a shot from outside the box by Elias. In the 16th minute, Corinthians again attacked: Jucilei received the ball alone inside the box and only failed to open the scoring thanks to a great save by Marcelo Lomba. On a counterattack seven minutes later, Cristian Borja made a good play for Flamengo down the left wing and crossed to Val Baiano, but the black-and-white defense cleared it.
After so much persistence, the home team opened the scoring in the 39th minute. Elias broke free from his marker and fired a beautiful shot from outside the box, unstoppable by Lomba: 1-0. The goal gave Flamengo a little more leverage. Two minutes later, Petkovic had a good opportunity to equalize from a free kick, and in the 46th minute, in stoppage time, Borja received a great cross from Juan, but even unmarked, he shot wide of Júlio César's goal, and the first half ended with a Corinthians victory.
Fla improves, but the score remains unchanged
In the second half, seeking an equalizer, Flamengo began to have more possession, but with little direction. To speed up the Flamengo attack, Rogério Lourenço decided to make changes: he took off Kleberson and Borja and brought on Michael and Vinícius Pacheco in the 10th minute.
Flamengo continued to control the game, but the home side threatened with counterattacks, such as in the 27th minute, when Elias burst into the box after a pass from Jorge Henrique and fired two dangerous shots. Jean prevented the first, and Lomba made another great save from the rebound. In the end, Pacheco and Michael came close to equalizing for Flamengo, but the score remained unchanged, and it was Corinthians fans who made their parents happiest on this second Sunday of August.
