Flamengo demands that São Paulo relinquish the five-time Brazilian champion's trophy. The controversy surrounding the trophy for the first five-time Brazilian champion appears to be just beginning. After the CBF stated that the trophy is likely to end up in São Paulo's hands at the end of the season, Flamengo decided to take action for what it believes it is entitled to. Considered by the 13 Clubs to be the only five-time national champion, Flamengo notified São Paulo on Wednesday afternoon that it must refrain from receiving the trophy or deliver it to Gávea.

In the document, Flamengo states that it did not decide the 1987 title against Sport, the second division champion, after the decision of the Clube dos 13, then presided over by former São Paulo president Carlos Miguel Aidar. That year, after the clubs split with the CBF, the Copa União was organized. Flamengo defeated Internacional 1-0 and was crowned champion.

"We stopped talking and made a decision. In 1987, São Paulo signed the document guaranteeing the title to Flamengo, in which it stated its position in favor of not deciding the title with Sport. We'll see if they receive the trophy as the only five-time champions. If that happens, we'll take other measures," Flamengo's lawyer, Michel Assef Filho, told the newspaper "Extra."

CBF technical director Virgílio Elísio says São Paulo may receive the trophy at the Brasileirão closing ceremony, but he is analyzing the regulations that award the trophy to the first five-time champion in alternating titles or three-time consecutive champion. Since the documents are old, he only received them this Tuesday. GLOBOESPORTE.COM tried to contact the director to find out if there had been a definitive decision, but was unable to reach him.
