Flamengo said goodbye to the 2010 Brazilian Championship this Sunday (December 05.12th) with a goalless draw against Santos at Vila Belmiro. The red-and-black team had the best goal opportunities, especially in the first half, but a heavy rain that fell during the second half caused puddles on the pitch, making the game difficult for both teams and the score remained unchanged.
With this result, the Flamengo team finishes its participation in the competition with 44 points, in 14th place. Now, the red-and-black team must wait for the Copa Sudamericana final between Goiás and Independiente-ARG, on Wednesday (December 08.12th), to find out if it will compete in the international tournament next year. The Argentine title guarantees Flamengo's qualification.
Movement and good chances
Even playing away from home and with a team that played together for the first time in the competition, Flamengo looked very comfortable in the first 45 minutes of the match against Santos. Coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo's team, wanting the victory to secure a spot in next year's Copa Sudamericana, was not intimidated by Neymar and company and went in search of its objective.
With youngsters Negueba and Diego Maurício moving around a lot, and with the duo Fierro and Leonardo Moura supporting on the right side, Flamengo had good chances to open the scoring. The first came in the 13th minute with a header from Diego Maurício after a cross from Fierro. Six minutes later, the same Diego shot hard and low across goal, and Negueba almost managed to push it into the net. In the 28th minute, Negueba again shot high, forcing a save from Rafael. In the 33rd minute, Diego Maurício almost scored again with a beautiful placed shot. The pressure from Flamengo was intense, but the score remained 0-0 until halftime.
Rain disrupts the situation and the score remains at zero.
In the second half, changes occurred on the field. Not only in Flamengo's lineup, which saw Willians replace Maldonado, but literally on the pitch itself. The rain, which had already fallen in the first half, intensified in the second half, causing many puddles on the Vila Belmiro pitch. The downpour, despite making ball control a little more difficult, did not dampen the Flamengo players' motivation, and the pressure continued.
At nine minutes, Renato almost scored the first goal from a free kick. At 22 minutes, Negueba made a beautiful individual play and also came close to scoring. Shortly after, by choice of Vanderlei Luxemburgo, more changes were made to the Flamengo team: experience replaced youth. Negueba came off for Val Baiano and Diego Maurício was replaced by Petkovic. Flamengo continued to be the better team, creating the clearest goal opportunities, but the score remained unchanged. At 46 minutes, Val Baiano even scored, but he was offside. In the end, it was all square, with no goals.
