The Brazilian Championship's suspension for the World Cup provides an opportunity to analyze the statistics from Flamengo's first seven matches in the competition. Comparing them to the 2009 figures, when Flamengo won its sixth national championship, the start of the Gávea team's campaign isn't much different.
In seven games, in the campaign for the sixth title, Flamengo earned just one more point than this year: 10. There were three wins (against Santo André, Atlético-PR, in Adriano's debut, and Internacional), a draw at home against Avaí, and three losses (Cruzeiro, Sport and Coritiba). Two of them caused much dissatisfaction among the red-and-black fans: Sport's lightning comeback in Recife, when Flamengo took a 2-0 lead, and Coritiba's 5-0 rout at Couto Pereira.
It's worth remembering that in 2009, the Red-Black team also suffered from a shortage of replacement players during part of the championship. Some of the young players currently being used by Rogério Lourenço were actually used during last year's competition, such as Camacho and Lenon, as well as full-backs Galhardo and Jorbison.
"Last year, we also had a lot of young players. There came a point in the championship where we needed to use a lot of players from the youth academy, due to injuries and players leaving. Exactly the same as this year. But the board is working to strengthen the squad, because experience is needed in a championship group. That's how we were champions in 2009," said goalkeeper Bruno.
Flamengo returns to training on June 15th, at 9 am, in Gávea.
