The Brazilian Under-23 Championship kicks off this Sunday (September 19.09) for Flamengo and Fluminense at 15:30 p.m. at Los Larios Stadium in Duque de Caxias. And as expected, a championship debut, especially one featuring a classic, is surrounded by anticipation. The Flamengo players know that a Flamengo vs. Fluminense match is unique in any division, and so they want a victory to start the competition off on the right foot. Flamengo's official website will provide a link to the live broadcast of the match.
Coach Renato Trindade knows that the training time was not the best possible, but he is counting on the strong base he has under his command to come away with a victory in Xerém.
"My idea, obviously, is to debut with a win against Fluminense. I have a base to take to the field, but we can count on one or two more players. I believe I can count on Léo Medeiros' experience in midfield, and another who has impressed me a lot is Rômulo. I was moved by his commitment in training and his love for Flamengo," he said.
Rômulo, praised by the coach, is one of the most experienced athletes in the group, having won several titles in the youth team and also participated in the three-time state championship campaign from 2007 to 2009 and last year's Brasileirão. As one of the group's leading lights, he knows he has a significant responsibility in the match.
"It's an important championship, a great opportunity for us to get on the field and showcase our football. Defending Flamengo, especially in a derby and in a competition with such visibility, is a great opportunity, and we'll do everything we can to get off to a good start," he noted.
Midfielder Pecka, one of the players who came through the club's youth ranks and returned to the Red-Blacks to compete in the competition, doesn't see a better match to debut than a classic against Fluminense.
"Flamengo vs. Flu is always an exciting game. Who doesn't want to play a classic like that? We went in with a lot of enthusiasm, regardless of the division, because Flamengo and Fluminense are always a great spectacle," he added.
Flamengo should enter the field with Vinícius, Lenon, Welinton, Henrique and Saba; Romulo, Antônio, Léo Medeiros and Camacho; Marquinhos and Borja.
