Clube de Regatas do Flamengo always strives to be involved in important campaigns, and now it's time to talk about "Orange December." The initiative, which has been running since 2014, advocates for prevention and information about skin cancer. The Most Beloved in the World embraces another important cause, promoting awareness and alerting everyone to the precautions they should take in combating the disease.
The main goal of the #OrangeDecember campaign is to ensure that the country has as few cases of the disease as possible. One way to inform people about the importance of the cause is through public awareness, and social media plays a key role in this process.
Flamengo cares about and protects the health of its athletes across all sports. Therefore, the club supports all of them in their daily routines and care when exposed to the sun. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in Brazil, with 176 new cases per year.
"Expose yourself, but don't get burned." This is the theme of the 2018 National Skin Cancer Prevention Campaign. This campaign is crucial for informing people about preventive measures and for seeking specialized medical help for diagnosis and treatment.
Seeking to inform and raise awareness about the campaign, Flamengo spoke with Dr. Claudio Cardone, Medical Coordinator of CUIDAR, about the measures that need to be taken to prevent skin cancer.
"It's important to try to avoid sun exposure between 10 a.m. and 16 p.m. as much as possible and identify any unusual spots that appear on the skin. We can't accept this as normal. It's essential to see a doctor, a dermatologist, so that an early diagnosis can be made to determine whether cancer is present. This is also crucial for treatment. Spots should be investigated, and these are the prevention methods we can suggest."
Dr. Cardone also explained how prevention works within sport and highlighted the importance of using sunscreen with a minimum factor of 15.
"Flamengo has water sports, where athletes are exposed to the sun, and we often can't avoid this. The first measure is choosing training times. It's best to avoid the 10 a.m. and 16 p.m. times. Of course, there are logistical barriers to this, but it's best for training to take place outside of these times. The second aspect is that everyone uses sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 15, and it's important to reapply it every two hours, due to sweat and contact with water."
In addition to avoiding sun exposure between 10 a.m. and 16 p.m., it's a good idea to always wear protective clothing and hats. Wearing UV-protective sunglasses is also crucial, along with daily sunscreen application.
