The second edition of the Primeira Liga Cup will take place from January 22nd to October 8th. In 2017, the tournament will feature sixteen teams from four Brazilian states.
Atlético-PR and Coritiba had their absences confirmed in 2016. The new clubs that will take part in the tournament will be Brasil de Pelotas, Chapecoense, Joinville, Paraná and Londrina, as well as Cruzeiro, Ceará, Grêmio, Internacional, Avaí, Figueirense, Criciúma, Atlético-MG, América-MG and Fluminense, who played in the competition last year.
Initially, the sixteen clubs will be divided into four groups, with the top two teams from each advancing to the quarterfinals. From this stage onward, matches will be played as single matches. The winners of each group will be the home team in their matches, and will determine their respective opponents through a draw involving the second-place teams.
Flamengo will be in group B, together with América-MG, Ceará and Grêmio.
The red-and-black team's journey will begin with a Brazilian football classic. On February 8th, the Mais Querido will face Grêmio in their competition debut.
