In 2009, the year Flamengo would become six-time Brazilian champions, the Rubro-Negro broke the record of never having beaten Santos in an official match at Vila Belmiro, defeating their opponent 2-1 in a thrilling encounter. The Most Beloved had not won in four rounds and, with the result, rose to ninth place in the table in the 14th round of the Brasileirão.
