SALVADOR - It's no secret that Flamengo has a large fan base in the Northeast. But every time the team plays in this region of Brazil, the local fans' celebrations seem to get even bigger. Early Friday evening, the Flamengo delegation arrived in Salvador, where they will face Vitória on Saturday at 18:30 pm in the second round of the Brasileirão. And the reception was grand.
Salvador's Dep. Luís Eduardo Magalhães International Airport welcomed around 100 fans, who greeted the team with loud cheers, flashing lights, and requests for autographs. After all, the team hasn't been to Bahia since October of last year.
"Every time we come here it's like this. The fans are huge and very passionate. It's great to see the strength that Flamengo has in every corner of Brazil," said Chilean Maldonado.
A native of the Northeast, but from Fortaleza, Ronaldo Angelim explains that this passion is not exclusive to Salvador.
"There are also a lot of Flamengo fans in Ceará, and throughout the Northeast region. Whenever Flamengo comes to play here, it's a celebration, because it's something that rarely happens," he said.
The last time Flamengo was in Salvador, it was to face Vitória in the Brasileirão. On October 7th of last year, the team from Gávea drew 3-3 with the Bahian red-and-black team. Denis Marques, Petkovic, and Zé Roberto scored the goals.
