The first leg ended in a 1-1 draw. Since the qualifying goal rule doesn't apply, another draw will send the match to penalties.
Flamengo is seeking its fourth title in the competition, which could come exactly in the year of the 30th anniversary of the fourth Brazilian title, in 1987. Furthermore, there is the opportunity to avenge the 2003 decision, when the Minas Gerais team prevailed after a 1-1 draw in the first game and a victory in Belo Horizonte.

The last time they faced each other in the competition, Flamengo won. In 2013, the duel was in the round of 16. In the first leg, at Mineirão Stadium, Cruzeiro won 2-1. But that red-and-black goal, scored by Carlos Eduardo, was crucial in deciding the team's spot. In Rio de Janeiro, Elias scored in the 42nd minute, equalizing the score and qualifying for Flamengo with the qualifying goal. The path to the third title was paved there.

Striker Guerrero defined in a few words the team's feeling for this Wednesday's decision and that there is only one way for the team to come away with the title: to play better than the opponent.
"These are games that every player wants to be involved in. I have to say that those who are on the field playing in a final are privileged. We have to enjoy it, motivate ourselves, and be aware of everything that could happen. These are seconds that can decide the game. As they say here, we're bloodshot and very motivated," he said.

The first leg of the final, played at Maracanã, was marked by nerves. Flamengo dominated, had more possession, and had more chances, but there were few clear-cut scoring opportunities. Cruzeiro barely threatened, only coming back after conceding the opening goal.
