It wasn't a perfect night. The crowd packed Ilha do Urubu and did their part, but Flamengo, despite dominating the match with more chances and possession, couldn't overcome Grêmio. In the head-to-head duel for second place in the standings, the red-and-black team suffered its first home defeat in the 2017 Brazilian Championship. 

The game was essentially attack versus defense. Flamengo's attack, Grêmio's defense, specifically goalkeeper Léo's, who put in a strong performance. In both the first and second half, Flamengo attacked more and took more risks. However, it was Grêmio who seized their opportunity and scored the decisive goal. 

With the loss, "Mais Querido" dropped to fourth place, and Grêmio itself took second place. Flamengo's next match will be this Sunday in Belo Horizonte, against Cruzeiro, at Mineirão Stadium, in the 14th round of the Brazilian Championship. 

First time

Just two minutes in, Flamengo created a threat. Diego delivered a great pass to Trauco, who crossed to Everton, but the number 22 lost control of the ball. A minute later, Trauco made a beautiful play, lined up the Tricolor defense, and shot over the Grêmio goal. 

But what seemed like a heated game cooled down, and Flamengo began passing the ball around, hoping for a chance against a closed Grêmio. The Rio Grande do Sul team also didn't try to create chances, except for a long-range shot from Ramiro, easily saved by Thiago. Flamengo only attacked again in the 24th minute, after a one-two between Márcio Araújo and Leandro Damião, which ended in a shot from the midfielder wide. 

A minute later, Grêmio scored with their only chance of the entire half. Luan made a good play, exchanged passes with Barrios, received the ball in the box, and fired a shot into Thiago's corner. 

Flamengo maintained its passing game until the best opportunity presented itself. In the 30th minute, Everton Ribeiro picked up a loose ball outside the box, but his shot went straight at the goal, but Léo saved it. In the 36th minute, Diego had another chance, this time, but he took a long shot that sent the ball over the bar. 

In the 44th minute, the best chance came from another outside shot. This time, Everton nearly repeated his stunning goal against Santos in the Copa do Brasil, looking for the goalkeeper's top corner, but the ball capriciously hit the crossbar. The first half ended with the Gaucho team in the lead. 

Second time

Flamengo came back with a desire to tie the game, and in the first minute, Diego received a pass from Damião, but his shot was blocked by Léo. Six minutes later, Everton made a great play and found Damião, who fired a left-footed shot wide. 

In the 14th minute, Zé Ricardo brought on Geuvânio in place of Marcio Araújo. The following minute, Rafael Vaz headed a free kick that was brilliantly saved by Léo. In the 16th minute, Geuvânio had his chance, but the ball was once again stopped by the Grêmio goalkeeper. In the 18th minute, it was Everton's turn, who also stopped Léo.  

At 31, coach Zé Ricardo brought on Felipe Vizeu and Mancuello for Cuellar and Trauco, respectively. The team continued to control the match, while Grêmio simply defended. In the last minute, Damião had one more chance, but was unsuccessful. Despite their dominance, Flamengo failed to score and left the field defeated after 34 unbeaten matches in Rio de Janeiro.
