Flamengo and Botafogo duel at Engenhão

The duel that has been a symbol of balance and rivalry in Rio de Janeiro football in recent years will see another chapter in its history this Saturday (September 02.09nd) at Engenhão Stadium. At 18:30 pm, Flamengo and Botafogo will face off once again, this time in the second leg of the 2010 Brazilian Championship, in a match where the traditional red-and-black team will be the main weapon of the Gávea team. With great determination, Flamengo will enter the field trying to secure a victory to distance itself from the bottom of the competition.
The players know this won't be an easy match. With 29 points and fifteenth place, Flamengo faces a rival with 41 points and sixth. Despite this, neither side is considered the favorite. The expectation is for another very even match, as the vast majority of matches between Flamengo and Botafogo have been since 2007.
"It's always a tough game. These are two great teams, a rivalry that has really grown a lot in recent years and that generates huge expectations. I hope that, like in the first round, we can come out victorious," said captain Leo Moura.
Flamengo coach Silas hasn't revealed his starting lineup for the match. Without left-back Juan, he could count on Rodrigo Alvim or Uendel in the starting lineup, and he also has the option of fielding a three-man defense. Regardless, the group knows the key is to dedicate themselves and fight until the end for another victory.
"We don't know who will start, but the important thing is that Flamengo's squad is strong, that everyone is confident of a victory and, regardless of who comes in, they will do their best to help the team win the three points," said David.
The rivalry is an added motivation for the players to go all out in this derby. Goalkeeper Marcelo Lomba, for example, who has been at Gávea since he was a boy, knows all too well what a duel with Botafogo entails and hopes the Red-Blacks can leave the João Havelange Municipal Olympic Stadium with a victory.
"Botafogo is a quality team, with a great coach, and they're sure to put in a great performance. But we know how important it is to get a positive result in this match, and we'll go after it with all our might. Every match is a decisive one in the Brazilian Championship, and a derby is even more important because of everything it entails," he added.
