The game
Flamengo started the derby with the majority of possession and pushing forward from the first minute. Fluminense, on the other hand, struggled to break out of their own half. In the 10th minute, the red-and-black team made their first good attack. Gerson led a counterattack and passed to Gabi on the left wing, who controlled the ball and fired a cross. The ball skimmed past Fábio's left post.
In the 20th minute, Matheus Cunha passed the ball to Wesley behind Marcelo. The full-back controlled the ball, exchanged passes with Gerson, and fired a left-footed shot toward goal. Fábio made a save from the corner. Fluminense continued to press. In the 25th minute, Gabi passed the ball to Arrascaeta in the box, who controlled it and fired a powerful shot that Fábio saved.
Flamengo was far superior in the first half, creating several chances to open the scoring, but the teams went into the break without finding the net.
In the second half, the game became more open, with both teams constantly looking to attack. In the 13th minute, Fluminense scored through Arias, but after a VAR review, the referee awarded a foul on Cebolinha.
After the disallowed goal, Rubro-Negro tried to maintain possession of the ball in the attacking field in search of finding spaces in the tricolor defense.
In the 42nd minute, Gabi also found the net, but the referee checked VAR and disallowed the goal. Pablo fouled Cano in the initial play. In stoppage time, Luiz Araújo was sent off for a rough challenge on Marcelo. The derby ended 0-0 at the Maracanã.
