The game
Flamengo started the derby by attacking, looking for the first goal. Luiz Araújo received the ball on the byline and crossed into the box. Cebolinha won the challenge but headed wide.
With the entire team positioned on the attacking side, Flamengo exchanged passes and prowled the Tricolor's box. Fluminense, meanwhile, waited behind, hoping to mount a counterattack. In the 15th minute, Flamengo nearly opened the scoring. Erick regained possession and passed to Gerson, who passed to Cebolinha. He burst into the box and shot against the post.
The Mais Querido created another good chance in the 25th minute. Filipe Luís went to the baseline and crossed low for Luiz Araújo to hit twice. On the rebound, the left-back tried again, but Fábio saved again.
While Flamengo constantly pushed forward, Fluminense punctuated the game with fouls. In the 42nd minute, the best chance of the first half came. Arrascaeta crossed, Pedro couldn't head it, and the ball fell to Gerson, who controlled it with his chest and fired a shot. Fábio made another great save.
After so much persistence, Mengão opened the scoring in first-half stoppage time. Erick provided a beautiful pass to Arrascaeta, who dribbled past Nino and fired into the corner, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance: 1-0. The Rubro-Negro went into halftime ahead.
Needing to score, Fluminense returned to the second half more attacking. Flamengo, on the other hand, was well-positioned defensively and gave their opponents little space.
In the 10th minute, Léo Pereira unleashed a powerful shot into the air, finding Arrascaeta free in a legal position. The Uruguayan attempted to control the ball, but Fábio came out to make the save. Fluminense equalized in the 17th minute with a Yony González goal, making it 1-1.
In the final minutes, the red-and-black team threw themselves into attack in search of the winning goal. In the 42nd minute, Gerson received the ball on the right wing, cut inside, and took a shot that Fábio saved. In stoppage time, Gabi and Nino were sent off after shoving each other. The derby ended in a draw at the Maracanã.
