Flamengo secured a place in the final of the Campeonato Carioca after beating Botafogo 2-1, on Sunday afternoon (23), at Maracanã. With the result, Mais Querido faces Fluminense, a clash that has not taken place to decide the State Championship since 1991.

That year, the decision began to be played on December 15, 1991. The first leg, played at Maracanã, ended in a 1-1 draw. Coach Carlinhos lined up the Most Beloved with: Gilmar, Charles Guerreiro, Júnior Baiano, Wilson Gottardo and Piá; Uidemar, Júnior, Nélio and Zinho; Paulo Nunes and Gaúcho.

Using the same starting lineup, Flamengo returned to Maracanã to battle for victory and the state title. Fluminense opened the scoring in the first half with Ézio and went into halftime with the advantage. Flamengo, however, went after the result and turned the match around with goals from Uidemar, Gaúcho, and Zinho.

Flamengo attempted a comeback with Ézio scoring again. However, Júnior scored in the final minutes, sealing the 4-2 victory and securing the title for Flamengo in front of nearly 50 fans at the Maracanã stadium on December 19.

The competition's top scorer was Gaúcho, who scored 17 goals in the Carioca.

The teams faced each other in 1995, when Fluminense defeated Flamengo to win the State Championship. However, the match was part of the final round of the decisive octagonal tournament. Although the teams were the only ones with a chance of winning the title at that time, the match wasn't a final.

In history, the teams have contested three Campeonato Carioca finals. In total, "Mais Querido" has won 33 titles in the competition, while Fluminense has won 31. Both clubs are the most successful in the state championship.
