Retrospect
Flamengo and Santos have a nearly century-old rivalry, with many memorable moments. The first encounter was 97 years ago, in 1920, with Santos winning. Since then, there have been 118 matches, with a balanced score: Santos has won 43 times and Flamengo 41.
In 1983, the teams faced off for the Brazilian championship. In the first leg, at Vila Belmiro, Santos won 2-1. In the return leg, one of the greatest performances of Flamengo's Golden Generation took place. Zico, Leandro, and Adílio scored in a 3-0 victory at the Maracanã, which was packed with 155.253 fans – the largest crowd in the history of the Brazilian Championship.
