The game
The derby began at a moderate pace, with both teams looking to maintain possession. With the first dangerous attack, Mengão opened the scoring! The play began with a Cebolinha shot off the crossbar. Following the play, Emerson Royal sent a low cross that Bruno Henrique deflected first time, but Léo Jardim saved. Carrascal tapped the rebound into the back of the net for his first goal with the Sacred Mantle.
After the goal, Vasco was forced to attack more, and in the 24th minute, Puma Rodríguez headed the ball firmly from the penalty spot, forcing Rossi to make a fine save to prevent the equalizer. The ball hit the post and bounced back to Emerson Royal to clear the danger.
In the 29th minute, Vasco equalized in the derby. Coutinho took a corner kick into the box, Rayan rose to the far post and headed the ball over Rossi: 1-1. In the final stretch of the first half, the game became quite choppy, halted several times by fouls, mainly by Vasco. As a result, the teams went into halftime with the score tied.
Flamengo returned for the second half pushing up their defenses to force Vasco's ball out of play into error. Before the 15th minute, coach Filipe Luís made his first substitutions. Samuel Lino and Viña replaced Cebolinha and Ayrton Lucas, respectively.
All in attack, Flamengo moved the ball around the opposing box, looking for space to penetrate. With Pedro and Arrascaeta also on the field, Flamengo created a dangerous situation. Saúl received the ball in the semi-circle and sent a powerful shot against the crossbar, drawing a "huh" from the Nation.
Another good chance for the red-and-blacks came in the 24th minute, when Royal crossed high into the net. The ball fell to Samuel Lino, who headed it in. Vasco's defense scrambled to head it in, and Pedro shot toward goal. Léo Jardim saved it on the line.
In the final minutes, Flamengo went all-in and created chances to score the winning goal. In the 43rd minute, Pedro set up a back pass to Luiz Araújo, who crossed into the box for the number 9. The ball hit Lucas Oliveira, who saved it. Pedro then also missed a chance to score. The match ended at Maracanã with the score tied.
