Flamengo and Grêmio drew 1-1 in the first leg of the CONMEBOL Libertadores semifinals on Wednesday night at the Arena do Grêmio. Grêmio opened the scoring with a header from Bruno Henrique, and Grêmio equalized with Pepê. The teams will face each other again at the Maracanã on October 23rd.

The game

Flamengo dominated the match from the start. In the first half, Mengão had two goals disallowed by VAR. In the first, scored by Everton Ribeiro, Argentine referee Nestor Pitana was right to call a foul on striker Gabigol. The second disallowance, however, was highly questionable. Gabigol, who scored the disallowed goal, appeared to be on the same line as the defender.

In the second half, Flamengo continued to dominate the match. While their attack threatened Grêmio, Diego Alves did his part from the back. He made at least two excellent saves from shots by Everton Cebolinha and Matheus Henrique. In the 23rd minute, Bruno Henrique opened the scoring for Mengão with a header from Arrascaeta's cross. Mengão still had another goal by Gabigol disallowed before conceding the equalizer.
