The 15 Flamengo fans who were present at the Maracanã on Thursday afternoon (April 8th) left disappointed with the 2-2 draw. After falling behind, Flamengo staged a heroic comeback against Universidad de Chile, but the Chilean team managed to equalize in the 46th minute of the second half. With this result, Flamengo remains in second place in Group 08.04 of the Copa Santander Libertadores, with seven points.
And it wasn't just the fans who were disappointed with the result. The players weren't happy either, but they praised the team's fighting spirit.
"The team fought hard and chased the result. This late draw is part of football. We still have two games ahead of us and now we have to win no matter what. It's a challenge, but everyone here likes challenges. Nothing is lost yet," said captain Bruno.
Flamengo's next Libertadores match will be on Wednesday (April 14.04th), against Universidad Católica in Chile. Then, on April 21.04st, the Rubro-negro will host Caracas at the Maracanã.
The first half was marked by Flamengo's complete control. The Rubro-negro team came onto the field showing determination, had much more possession of the ball, but went into halftime trailing on the scoreboard. Universidad de Chile, in their only real scoring opportunity of the first half, managed to score through Montillo and took the lead.
On the occasions when he posed a threat to Universidad de Chile's goal, Vagner Love was the most prominent. The striker moved around a lot and troubled La "U" goalkeeper Conde four times. Juan, from a free kick, also forced the Chilean team's goalkeeper to make a great save in the 40th minute. However, in the 43rd minute, Montillo finished off a cross from the left, inside the six-yard box, and opened the scoring.
In the second half, Andrade sent the team forward. The coach took Kleberson off at halftime and brought Bruno Mezenga onto the field. Just 15 minutes in, Pacheco was replaced by midfielder Petkovic. The rain also made its presence felt, but it didn't stop Flamengo's increasingly intense attacks.
Flamengo repeatedly attacked the Chilean goal. Bruno Mezenga tried, Vagner Love also, but the goal came from Michael's feet in the 22nd minute. The midfielder made a beautiful play on the right, crossed to Juan, who set up the ball for Vagner Love. The "Goalscorer of Love" challenged the goalkeeper, won the ball, and crossed for Michael to finish.
Flamengo put a lot of pressure on their opponent, had a penalty not awarded, but still managed to score their second goal. In the 37th minute, Petkovic passed to Vagner Love, who crossed to Michael. His shot was deflected, and the ball fell to Léo Moura who put it into Conde's net. When the game seemed won, Universidad de Chile equalized. After a good play by Contreras, Matías Rodriguez received the ball alone in the area and scored, in the last dangerous play of the game.
