While a team usually relaxes after winning a trophy, Flamengo demonstrated this Wednesday that there was no "hangover" after lifting the Guanabara Cup last Sunday. Focused, focused, and precise, the team led by Paulo Cesar Carpegiani defeated Madureira 4-0 and got off to a strong start in the Rio Cup, the second round of the Campeonato Carioca.
Now, Mengão faces the classic against Fluminense, next Saturday, at Arena Pantanal. This will be the last commitment before the debut in the Conmebol Libertadores, against River Plate, next Wednesday (28), behind closed doors.
Precision and advantage
From the opening whistle, Flamengo set the tone: possession and movement to involve the opponent with quality passing. And that's how the team created space and created opportunities to open the scoring. Diego, Everton Ribeiro, Lucas Paquetá, and Henrique Dourado opened up the defense with their dynamic play. Thus, in the sixth minute, the Flamengo number 10 finished with a diving shot that posed a serious threat to the opponent's goal.
Turning the game around and showing great patience, the goal didn't take long to arrive. In the 17th minute, Diego was fouled just outside the box, which he took himself. A textbook shot, the ball into the top corner, and the score was 1-0.
The goal opened up more space, forcing Madureira to push for an equalizer. In this vein, Madureira scored the second goal by capitalizing on their opponent's anxiety. Due to a mistake on the offside trap, Lucas Paquetá broke through alone behind the defense and fired a shot from mid-air to seal the first half's 2-0 victory.
Penalty and rout
In the second half, the game remained unchanged, with Flamengo largely dominating. Madureira sought to defend more aggressively, hand-to-hand, and thus ended up conceding a penalty on Everton Ribeiro in the 8th minute. Newcomer Henrique Dourado took the ball, and he did what he usually does from the penalty spot: score. 3-0.
With the game in hand and the result assured, Carpegiani took the opportunity to rotate the team and make substitutions. Rômulo, Trauco, and Vinicius Junior all gained playing time.
It wasn't long before the "Garoto do Ninho" (Nest Boy) appeared to close the score against Nilton Santos. After a rebound inside the box, the number 20 opportunistic player scored the fourth goal for the red-and-black team.
And now?
This was just the team's debut in the Rio Cup. Flamengo has already qualified for the state semifinals in advance.
