Flamengo pays tribute to black idols in match against Cruzeiro
To celebrate Black Awareness Month, each athlete in the squad will have the name of a star player printed on their game shirt.

Flamengo's history is directly linked to diversity, and the Club is proud to be followed everywhere by the largest and most diverse fan base in the world. With roots in every corner of Brazil, the "Mais Querido" (Most Beloved) is a link that unites all social classes, creeds, and colors. The team from Gávea, both red and black, could not fail to celebrate Black Consciousness Day, celebrated last Tuesday, November 20th. This Sunday (25), in the match valid for the 37th round of the Brazilian Championship, against Cruzeiro, the athletes of the professional soccer squad will each pay tribute to a Black player who has marked Flamengo's 123-year history. In total, 35 names of the club's stars will be printed on the match jerseys.
The list of honorees is packed with great Rubro-Negro figures, including Domingos da Guia, Zizinho, Adílio, Andrade, Júnior, Nélio, Fio Maravilha, Romário, and Obina. From Leônidas da Silva to Adriano Imperador, the Most Beloved celebrates its Black stars who have forever marked the hearts of the Rubro-Negro Nation with their grit, love, passion, and goals.
For the club's president, Eduardo Bandeira de Mello, the tribute is essential to recognize those who fought and fight for the Sacred Mantle, on and off the field.
"This tribute the club is paying to its former players, and also to its Black fans, is almost an obligation. We are intimately connected to Black people. Flamengo's own symbol, the Vulture, arose from a racist outcry by other fan groups, which we have incorporated into our own. We are very proud to have a largely Black fan base. The players have always been part of our history, some of whom were even persecuted. But Flamengo is much bigger than that, and this kind of tribute is more than deserved," he concluded.
