Flamengo failed to break the historic stalemate against Atlético Paranaense at Arena da Baixada in Curitiba. The Rio de Janeiro team dominated much of the match but ended up losing 1-0. With this result, the current Brazilian champion remains with 20 points and, next Thursday (26.08/21), will face another Atlético, the Minas Gerais team, at Maracanã, at XNUMX pm.
And the Flamengo players' heads are already focused on the next match, as they were unable to snatch the three points from their rivals from Paraná, despite having created some scoring chances.
"I think not being able to finish was the main reason we didn't get the win. But we can't let that get us down, as we have to work hard for Thursday's game," said Léo Moura.
Ronaldo Angelim was another to lament the missed opportunities. But, like the red-and-black captain, he emphasized the importance of recovering quickly from the defeat.
"We needed to finish better. We created opportunities, and in a game like this, we can't afford to miss out on scoring. The match ended up being decided by a set piece, and I think we could have even come away with the win. But it didn't work out, and we need to be calm for the next match," said Angelim.
Despite maintaining control of the first half, Flamengo struggled in the final minutes. While the Rio de Janeiro-based team was the first to create a clear scoring chance, after a beautiful exchange between Petkovic and Val Baiano in the 28th minute, it was the Paraná-based team that ultimately had the better chances.
However, before Atlético-PR could even score the first goal of the game, Flamengo threatened again. After a good run by left-back Juan in the 36th minute, Petkovic positioned himself at the penalty spot to receive the ball, but was ultimately denied a shot by Olberdam.
From then on, it was all Atlético. In the 37th minute, Maikon Leite hit the crossbar for Atlético, and four minutes later, Paulo Bayer missed two good chances, the second of which he scored alone.
At halftime, coach Rogério Lourenço changed Flamengo's attack, taking off Leandro Amaral and Val Baiano. He brought on youngsters Vinícius Pacheco and Cristian Borja. The change seemed to have paid off, and in the opening minutes, the Rio de Janeiro club twice threatened goalkeeper Neto: Angelim nearly scored after a corner, and Correa fired a powerful shot just wide of the Atlético goal.
Atlético managed to level the score, but Flamengo continued to have the better chances. In the 22nd minute, Léo Moura found Vinícius Pacheco on the right. The Flamengo forward fired a shot into the box, and defender Rodolfo nearly scored an own goal. A minute later, Petkovic fired a good shot after a good play by Juan, but goalkeeper Neto saved.
Coach Rogério Lourenço changed Flamengo's attacking line again in the 30th minute, replacing Petkovic with Kleberson. However, the midfielder didn't have many chances to lead the Rio de Janeiro club into attack. Therefore, it was the team from Paraná who ended up scoring. Paulo Bayer took a corner kick, and Manoel deflected it at the near post.
In the final minutes, Flamengo no longer created any danger and Atlético, therefore, held on to the positive result.
