In the traditional duel between Flamengo and Atlético Mineiro, the first of 2010, this Thursday (August 26.08th), the score remained unchanged. Both Flamengo and Atlético Mineiro had their chances to score, but failed to find the net. For the current Brazilian champions, there was an added disappointment, as they played at home and dominated most of the game.
With this result, Flamengo reaches 21 points, remaining in tenth position in the standings. In the next round, the Rubro-negro will face Guarani in Campinas.
Replacing debutant Diogo, Val Baiano came closest to scoring for Flamengo with a powerful shot in the second half that struck the crossbar. The striker, aware of the increased pressure he will face, hopes to have some luck on his side.
"We're really lacking luck. Before, we lacked chances, but now the ball is getting there. Leandro Amaral almost scored in the first half, and even Diogo headed a ball dangerously. With me, it was that ball that hit the crossbar, wasn't it?! I think the goalkeepers are having more luck than us. But that will change, and the balls will go in. I'm sure of it," said Val Baiano.
In the first half, Flamengo dominated the game, but again struggled to create scoring opportunities. Despite having more possession than their opponent, the Rubro-negro (Flamengo) rarely threatened Atlético's goal. Conversely, they were also rarely threatened by Galo (Atlético Mineiro).
At 12 minutes, Petkovic came close to scoring from a free kick. Six minutes later, the Serbian midfielder was again involved in a good play. He passed to Léo Moura, who crossed into the box, but found no Flamengo player.
The match became lukewarm, and it wasn't until the 33rd minute that another real scoring chance arose. And it was for Flamengo. After a beautiful play by debutant Diogo, Leandro Amaral found himself one-on-one with the Atlético-MG goalkeeper, but couldn't score. Atlético-MG responded immediately with Diego Tardelli, who almost scored against Flamengo.
In the second half, the teams returned with the same formation, but with greater impetus. And it was Atlético Mineiro who first threatened Flamengo's goal. Just six minutes in, Serginho shot, but Lomba made the save. At 12 minutes, another chance for Atlético. Eron shot hard and the ball went very close.
Aiming to give Flamengo's midfield more mobility, Rogério took off Correa and put Galhardo in the middle. The right-back, playing out of position, had a good chance soon after, but shot wide when facing the goalkeeper.
The Flamengo coach made two substitutions, taking off Renato and Diogo and bringing on Vinícius Pacheco and Val Baiano, but nothing had the desired effect: winning the match. However, in the 33rd minute, with a free kick by Petkovic, and in the 39th minute, with Val Baiano hitting the crossbar, Flamengo almost made it 1-0. But it was a day when no one managed to score.
