Flamengo loses its unbeaten run in the Brazilian Championship

Fluminense wins the classic 2-1 and Rubro-Negro suffers its first defeat in the competition

Flamengo tasted defeat for the first time in the 2010 Brazilian Championship. With a performance below expectations, coach Rogério Lourenço's team was defeated by Fluminense in the classic on Wednesday night, at Maracanã, 2-1 (goals by Rodriguinho and Conca for Fluminense and goalkeeper Bruno for Rubro-Negro). The team from Gávea remains with five points in the table and plays again on Saturday, at 18:30 pm, against Grêmio, in Rio de Janeiro.

Few opportunities

Flamengo took the field with just one striker (Vagner Love) and two playmakers (Vinícius Pacheco and Guilherme Camacho). Coach Rogério Lourenço's plan was to add more movement to the Flamengo attack, but Fluminense quickly opened the scoring. In the 11th minute, Rodriguinho received a cross in the box, turned, and shot past Bruno to make it 1-0.

The Gávea team felt the blow and only managed to scare their rivals in the 20th minute. Vagner Love sprinted forward and tried to chip the ball over Rafael, but the Tricolor goalkeeper palmed it away for a corner. The move galvanized the red-and-black team, and six minutes later, Vinícius Pacheco had another good opportunity to score, but Rafael, well-positioned, saved once again. Fluminense, with the lead, also created little and merely controlled possession until halftime.

Bruno scores, but Fla doesn't turn it around
Seeking to boost his team's attacking prowess, coach Rogério Lourenço made two changes at halftime: taking off Rômulo and Vinícius Pacheco and bringing on Ramón and Diego Maurício. However, as in the first half, Fluminense found the back of the net. In the 10th minute, Conca unleashed a beautiful shot from outside the box, leaving Bruno unable to save: 2-0.

Things got even more complicated in the 28th minute, when Fernando fouled Carlinhos and was sent off. Needing to equalize, the team went on the attack with a vengeance. Bruno finally pulled one back with a precise free kick, but there was no time to overturn the lead.
