The game
The match started off slow, with both teams studying each other. Flamengo's first chance came in the ninth minute: Everton passed to Cirino and fired. The number 7 sent the ball back to his teammate, who shot across goal, but Rogério Ceni saved. São Paulo responded in the 18th minute. Luís Fabiano fired a powerful shot, but Wallace got in front of the ball and deflected it out for a throw-in. Flamengo continued to exploit Everton's speed in the first half with wing plays. Before the end of the first half, Paulo Victor showed why he is considered one of the best goalkeepers in Brazilian football. In the 42nd minute, Paulo Miranda headed the ball from inside the six-yard box, and the Flamengo goalkeeper reflexively saved it with his foot.
At the start of the second half, the game's landscape changed little. But in the 12th minute, Flamengo had a great chance. Éverton crossed from the left. Gabriel appeared in the six-yard box and flicked the ball on goal, but Rogério Ceni recovered at the last second and made a fine save.
Seven minutes later, it was the Mais Querido's turn to deny the opposition a goal. Paulo Victor saved a shot one-on-one on the edge of the six-yard box. The ball fell to Luis Fabiano, who flicked it on goal. Anderson Pico stretched and cleared the ball off the line. Looking for a goal, Vanderlei Luxemburgo made a change in the 26th minute, bringing on Arthur Maia and Lucas Mugni for Gabriel and Almir. But it was the São Paulo team who opened the scoring.
Luís Fabiano headed in to make it 1-0 in the 28th minute. In the 34th, Alexandre Pato extended the lead. The Flamengo coach replaced Canteros with Eduardo in the 35th. Four minutes later, Flamengo was awarded a penalty. Arthur Maia took a corner kick, and the ball hit Paulo Henrique Ganso's hand inside the box. Everton converted the ball well and reduced the deficit. With little time remaining, Flamengo gained momentum and pushed forward, but could not equalize.
