Flamengo loses to Fluminense 2-1 in the Brasileirão

This Sunday (18), Flamengo lost to Fluminense by 2 to 1, at Maracanã, for the Brazilian Championship. Now the Most Beloved rests for ten days, due to the Fifa Date for the friendlies of the national teams around the world. Mengão returns to the field on the 28th, to face Fortaleza, for the twenty-eighth round of the Brasileirão.
This afternoon's FlaxFlu marked the 440th meeting between the teams. The match started evenly, with Flamengo pressing hard in midfield. As the first half progressed, Flamengo grew in play and created chances, but struggled in their finishing. In the final stretch of the first half, Fluminense opened the scoring with a penalty kick.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with Flamengo on top. But despite possession in the attacking half, Flamengo failed to capitalize on its chances and saw its opponent double the lead after a quick free kick. Flamengo pushed hard and even reduced the deficit through Gabi, but our top scorer's goal sealed the match.
The game
The match started evenly. Flamengo pressed hard in midfield and managed to inhibit their opponent's advances. In attack, the right flank with Gabi was the preferred choice.
Mengão's first big chance of the match came after a corner kick from the left. The ball fell to Arrascaeta, who hit a cross into the box; on the rebound, Thiago Maia took a shot from outside the box, but the ball went just wide of the post. Pedro then received the ball in midfield and quickly shook off his marker. The striker entered the box but was blocked as he was about to shoot. Flamengo was the better player.
The red-and-black blitz continued, with Arrascaeta receiving a through ball from Pedro and facing the goal. The Uruguayan entered the box and shot with his right foot, which the Tricolor goalkeeper made a good save. Everton Ribeiro led a counterattack and found Arrascaeta on the left, the Uruguayan was looking for Pedro in the area, but the pass was intercepted.

In the final stretch of the first half, the referee awarded a penalty to Fluminense after Cano challenged goalkeeper Santos. Paulo Henrique Ganso opened the scoring at the Maracanã stadium, making it 0-1. Flamengo looked for the equalizer until halftime, but Fluminense took the partial advantage into the locker room.
The second half started with a bang. Mengão's first attack came on a counterattack led by Rodinei on the right. The full-back's cross was blocked before reaching Gabi.
After a corner kick from the left, the ball fell to Rodinei in the halfway line. The full-back crossed to the far post, and Léo Pereira was there to head it home. Another great save from the opposing goalkeeper. Arrascaeta had three consecutive chances for Mais Querido. On two occasions, he received the ball at the edge of the box and shot into the corner, forcing saves from goalkeeper Fábio. On another occasion, he received the ball over the top and headed it just wide of the post.
After a quick free kick, Fluminense extended their lead with Nathan's goal to 0-2.
In the 37th minute, Everton Ribeiro played the ball into the box, Fábio came out to deflect it but couldn't find anything, Everton Cebolinha dove and deflected the ball into the middle of the confusion and Gabi, always well positioned, appeared to complete it into the back of the net. 1-2.
After Flamengo reduced the score, chaos erupted in the match. After a long pause, Everton Cebolinha, Marinho, Manoel, and Caio Paulista were sent off by the referee.
Flamengo fought until the end, but ended up being defeated at Maracanã.
