Flamengo loses to Independiente Del Valle in the first game of the Recopa
Mais Querido was defeated 1-0; the return match is at Maracanã, next Tuesday
By Flamengo Communication - inFacing torrential rain and the altitude of Quito, Flamengo lost to Independiente Del Valle on Tuesday night (21), for the first leg of the South American Recopa. The 1-0 score leaves the final result open. The goal was scored by Carabajal, with a header. Next Tuesday (28/02), Mais Querido receives the Ecuadorian team at Maracanã, at 21:30 pm.
The match was balanced in the first half. Flamengo knew how to play against the 2800-degree altitude and created good opportunities. Gabi was stopped by goalkeeper Ramirez on more than one occasion. The Flamengo defense denied Del Valle any clear chances, as they attempted to press but failed to invade the box.
In the second half, the heavy pitch had an even greater impact, and the match became a tight affair. Set pieces became important weapons. Santos was called into action on a Sornoza free kick, but prevented the opponent from scoring. The only goal was scored by Carabajal, with a header from a corner kick. Flamengo grew into the game with the introduction of Everton Cebolinha, who had two good chances. But Del Valle managed to hold on. In the final stretch, Ortiz was sent off for slapping David Luiz. The referee allowed only five minutes of stoppage time, and that was it: 1-0 Del Valle.
Before facing Independiente Del Valle again, Flamengo faces Botafogo, in the Campeonato Carioca.
